Sunbury gets its name from a Saxon chieftain called Sunna who built his riverside settlement, or Burgh, here.

During excavations for the new Sunbury Lock in 1926, remains of citizens living here between 4,000 and 3,000 BC were found and a later burial ground from the Bronze Age, dated around 1,700 BC was found on Sunbury Common.
It surely does even though rather unusual!
The yew tree in the churchyard of St Mary's is mentioned in Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and The Magpie Hotel in Thames Street was the original meeting place of the Grand Order of Water Rats in 1889.
